Ulrike Ottinger: Floating Food

The project "Floating Food" by Ulrike Ottinger revolves around the themes of food, water, religion and ritual. In a scenic spatial installation, the photographer and filmmaker addresses eating as a cultural and religious event on the one hand, and on the other, water as the origin and engine of transport, trade and discovery. In addition to film montages, photographs and ethnological objects, set designer Ottinger also integrates mythical creatures and figures from her film worlds in the spatial installation: a floating Shaman outfit and a Samurai robe made of dollar bills, with sword and helmet, are positioned opposite a large sacrificial altar. While she herself stays in the background as a distanced observer, Ulrike Ottinger allows the reader a very sensual experience of foreign (culinary) cultures. (Publisher Walter König)
