Chamissos Journey 1815 – Ulrike Ottingers Journey 2014

Nome, Alaska

On a voyage by ship, one is concerned with logbooks: From the logbooks of imagination and the logbooks of reality, a filmic reality will be (re)created.

With my project, I plan to follow the northern route of the expeditions by Chamisso, Bering, Cook and others. I am very interested in the various ethnic groups that live in the coastal areas of the Bering see between the Asian and American continent: the Coriaks, Itelmens, Evens,  Aleuts, Tlingit and Haida.

Otto von Kotzebue's route with the "Rurik" 1815 - 1818

The global circumnavigation of the Rurik took Adelbert von Chamisso from Kopenhagen, via Plymouth and Santa Cruz, across the Atlantic Ocean to Santa Catharina in Brazil and around Cape Horn into the Pacific Ocean, which was the main area that the Romanov expedition focused on. The ship sailed from La Concéption in South America to the Eastern Islands and then across the Pacific Ocean towards the Bering Sea, where it finally reached Kamchatka.

This part of the journey interests me especially. It includes the regions of Kamchatka, the Aleutian Islands, the Saint Lawrence Island, the Bering Strait, Chukchi Peninsula, and the coast of Alaska.

Due to the heavy ice, the Rurik expedition did not sail further than the Kotzebue Sund. Hence, the original quest, namely to explore the northwest American coast in the search for a passage to the Atlantic Ocean, was not accomplished.
